Did You Know…
The word “Cosmetic” is derived from the Greek word “Kosmos” which means “of this world.”
The same laser that is used for hair removal, can get rid of toe nail fungus.
In the 1450s, women would shave their pubic hair to get rid of lice. And then they would have a pubic hair wig made as a replacement.
In the past some doctors tried to dye the patient hair dark so that more of the laser energy would be absorbed by the hair and thereby the laser would more effectively remove the hair. Unfortunately, it did not work because the dye did not reach the hair follicle.
A tan can absorb some of the energy of laser light and prevent the laser light from reaching the hair follicle. Do not get a tan before laser hair removal.
The idea behind the CoolSculpt machine started after doctors noticed that children who sucked on popsicles lost the fat in their cheeks without damage to the skin. It is amazing what can develop from a simple observation.
The light from a hair removal laser passes through the skin and is absorbed by the hair follicle. The laser energy is absorbed by the hair follicle and is destroyed. Since people have different skin colors, we need to have lasers with a variety of colors of laser light.
Neurotoxins are medications developed from the bacteria known as clostridium botulinum. Researchers noticed that people infected with this bacterium had suffered muscle weakness. Dysport and Botox have been developed from this discovery.
Just before the laser is fired, a jet of frozen air is sent to the skin to protect the skin from the laser energy and to decrease the pain.

Thinking of Some Summer “Touch Ups?”

The Best and Worst Cosmetic Procedures for Summer

Most of us start worrying more about how we look during the summer months. Vacations, beaches, swimsuits, bright sunlight bringing so much attention to our skin. We simply want to look our best, right?

However, it’s smart to consider how the treatment you undergo might respond to summertime sunlight and heat. Timing your treatment correctly can be incredibly helpful and save you a lot of discomfort, since the sunlight and heat (and avoiding it) may play a part in your recovery and results

Here are the best and worst cosmetic treatments for the summer:

YES: Dermal Fillers

During the summer, most people spend a lot of time outdoors in the bright sun. Because our faces are on full display, many people want their skin looking extra healthy and voluminous. This is why dermal fillers are a popular summertime treatment: not only will your skin look more youthful and healthy; the effects of dermal fillers aren’t bothered at all by sunlight.

NO: Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are harsh in general, and direct sunlight and heat will definitely cause your skin to be more vulnerable to UV rays during your recovery process. This makes it a not-so-great option during the summertime. As a rule of thumb, anyone getting a chemical peel should stay away from sunlight for at least one week. Sunscreen is a must regardless of the time of year.

YES: CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is another beauty procedure where its results aren’t affected by sunlight. It’s also great for the summertime, since it makes your body look incredible. CoolSculpting freezes hard-to-eliminate fat cells right out of the treated areas, creating a summer-ready body.

NO: Laser Treatments

How ironic is it that laser treatments are used to reverse sun damage, yet many people go right back out into the sun after getting the procedure? Laser treatments aren’t the best idea for the hot summertime months, since these treatments temporarily make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage and discoloration. For a few weeks after getting a laser treatment, patients should avoid direct sunlight.

YES: Botox

Unlike the laser procedures or chemical peels mentioned above, Botox doesn’t make your skin more vulnerable to sun rays. It’s an injection, not a surface treatment, so all it does is make your skin look smooth.

If you’re thinking about getting a skin treatment or any other beauty procedure for summer and you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at Fremont Laser & Skin Care. Our team of specialists can answer anything for you!

Is CoolSculpting Permanent?

At first, CoolSculpting seemed too good to be true. After all, what could be easier than relaxing for an hour while stubborn areas of fat are being frozen off your body?

However, now that CoolSculpting has been proven to be not only the real deal, but revolutionary, new questions are cropping up. One of them is: Are CoolSculpting results permanent?

The Short Answer is Yes…

And the long answer is still yes, but it comes with an explanation. CoolSculpting has been clinically proven to provide permanent results. Once your fat cells have been frozen during your treatment, they die and are removed forever through your body’s natural eradication process. Our bodies don’t produce new fat cells (thank goodness), so they do not re-appear.

This doesn’t mean you can eat pizza and cake every night after your CoolSculpting treatments are finished. If you aren’t mindful about maintaining your health through diet and exercise, the fat cells that weren’t frozen away with CoolSculpting can swell, giving you a heavier body shape. They can either store more energy (meaning, they get larger) or they can release energy (get smaller). Because of this, your weight may fluctuate after CoolSculpting but not due to new fat cells.

What Happens if I Gain Weight After My CoolSculpting Treatment?

This is where the permanence comes in. Even if you do gain weight, you’ll still be thinner than you would be without CoolSculpting.

If you gain weight, your remaining fat cells can stretch and make you appear heavier. However, you’ll have less fat in the area that was treated than you would if you’d never had it done. For the rest of your life, you’ll always have less fat in the area treated. In this way, it remains treated. And if you don’t gain weight at all, you’ll easily maintain your thin, sculpted look!

The bottom line is, don’t look at CoolSculpting as a means to be able to eat whatever you like and remain thin. Instead, get CoolSculpting and embark on a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, and eat nutritious foods in order to feel and look good long-term.

What About Repeated Treatments?

Even though CoolSculpting is highly effective, patients want to get rid of even more fat in the same area. This is perfectly safe, and always comes down to a matter of personal preference. Each CoolSculpting session can reduce the fat layer by 25%, which is enough for some patients. After your first treatment, you can return about two months later to compare before-and-after photos. If you’re happy with the result, you’re all done! However, if you’d like to look even more sculpted and have another 25% fat reduction, it’s safe to have the area re-CoolSculpted.

At Fremont Laser, we specialize in CoolSculpting treatments. Call us at (510) 792-1579 for a free consultation to get on the path to a newly-sculpted you.

Can You CoolSculpt My Butt?

Butt of Course!

When you discover just how many areas of your body can be treated with CoolSculpting to get rid of stubborn fat, it might be a bit difficult to decide where to begin. However, one of the most popular and effective areas to have treated is (along with the stomach, of course) – drumroll… the butt!

Or, more precisely, the buttock area.

Have you heard of a “banana roll?” No, it isn’t a dessert (at least in this case). It’s the nickname for pockets of fat under your derrière. It also happens to be one of the number one areas people want CoolSculpting performed since the results are so significant.

Banana rolls are called this because they make a banana shape underneath the butt (upper back thighs). Many people have them. With CoolSculpting treatments, the fat cells in those banana rolls can be banished forever in about two hours. (That’s one hour for each side.)

If you’re wondering if CoolSculpting is the right treatment to try, note that the best candidates are individuals who are in fairly good shape, but who are having trouble getting rid of fat in certain areas.

Take the “pinch test.” If you can pinch all of the fat you’re trying to lose, CoolSculpting will most likely be ideal for you. If the fat you’d like to get rid of is kind of firm, it might be too difficult to “vacuum” into the CoolSculpting equipment, and you may not get the result you want. The area of fat that you’d like to have treated should be soft and malleable enough to be pulled up into the CoolSculpting applicator and make the right amount of contact with the panels that freeze the fat cells.

So basically, if your bum is squishy enough, it can be treated! Just remember that it needs to be fat that can be pinched, and not muscle. And as mentioned before, the derrière area is one of the most asked-about parts of the body to treat. Once the fat cells have been frozen away, they die and never come back. As long as you maintain healthy eating habits and a basic amount of exercise, your newly-sculpted butt (or any other treated area) stays sculpted.

CoolSculpting is FDA-approved, safe, fast, very effective, and requires no downtime. At Fremont Laser, we’re a leader in CoolSculpting treatments in the Bay area. If you’re interested in freezing your fat and getting the sculpted look you’ve been wanting, call us at (510) 792-1589 for a free consultation.

CoolSculpting Treats Stubborn Areas of Fat

But Cellulite… Not So Much

Even though Fremont Laser has been performing CoolSculpting treatments at our Fremont location for years, one question that we still answer most every day is whether CoolSculpting treats cellulite. Cellulite, usually found on the thighs and buttocks, is very common, and even the most fit among us aren’t immune from it.

It’s a logical question since cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin, causing the dimpled appearance. It would stand to reason that if treated fat cells are being flushed away through the body’s system, then cellulite would be good riddance. It’s reasonable, but wishful thinking. CoolSculpting is not a treatment for cellulite, and if cellulite is your main concern, CoolSculpting will not give you the results you want.

CoolSculpting reduces unwanted stubborn fat in nearly every area of the body, including the stomach, flanks (love handles), thighs, buttocks, chin, arms, etc. CoolSculpting is a gentle and effective procedure that uses a device to precisely target fat cells underneath the skin with a controlled temperature to freeze them. Over the next few months, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving nearby cells unharmed and a more sculpted you.

When you have stubborn areas of fat and cellulite, treating two birds with one type of treatment is exciting. However, our staff prefers to be realistic about results, and we cannot lead our clients to believe CoolSculpting treats cellulite. It doesn’t. But what you may notice is that your cellulite is less noticeable.

CoolSculpting might lessen the appearance or dimpling of cellulite because there is less fat underneath the connective tissue after treatment. CoolSculpting isn’t a treatment for cellulite though because it does nothing to the connective tissue, which causes cellulite in the first place.

CoolSculpting “Sculpts” The Body

CoolSculpting helps “sculpt” areas of the body that are notoriously resistant to diet and exercise. Those who are closer to their ideal weight are excellent candidates. For the time being, there are treatments that help diminish the look of cellulite and some are promising, but nothing eliminates cellulite forever yet.

Tips for Maximizing Results After CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is an opportunity to reduce fat cells in treated areas 25 percent. While that might not sound like a big difference, it can be a matter of inches. The decision to treat yourself to CoolSculpting means you’re serious about getting rid of those stubborn areas of fat that remain no matter how well you eat or how hard you exercise. It’s natural to want to do anything you can to maximize the results.

You’ll find several tips online, but like everything, you must evaluate the source and always check with your certified CoolSculpting provider before following them. We’ve taken some of the most common tips for maximizing results after CoolSculpting and given you the ones that work and the ones that won’t.

Massage post CoolSculpting.

Massage of the treated area will help the healing by getting rid of edema and softening the scar tissue. Ask your partner to massage the area twice each day for the first two weeks. Be sure to ask your partner for a foot rub and a back rub.

You should wear a waist compression garment after CoolSculpting to help sculpt the area.

Your certified CoolSculpting provider’s consultation is where all the sculpting begins. CoolSculpting is as artistic as it is a procedure. Your provider is trained to have an eye for symmetry and results. A compression garment can help with any swelling you have and help you heal in the shape that you desire. Most patients wear a garment like SPANX.

Watch your diet and exercise.

Ding. Ding. These are the two most important factors in getting great CoolSculpting results, and maintaining them. In fact, as the treated areas begin showing results, many patients start to exercise even more and diet becomes even more important. CoolSculpting results become their inspiration.

CoolSculpting: Fantastic Results for Men, Too

Top Fat-Busting Procedure For Men and Women

By now, everyone knows that CoolSculpting is one of the top fat-busting procedures out there. It’s quick, easy, painless, and requires no downtime. Best of all, the results are incredible. With ambassadors like Debra Messing and Molly Sims, as well as superfans like Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Aniston, CoolSculpting is a revolutionary non-invasive method of weight loss that has claimed its place in the world of aesthetic treatments.

But what you may not know is that CoolSculpting is also highly popular for men as well as women. It should come as no surprise, since CoolSculpting has so many benefits and yields such impressive results. After all, men don’t want those love handles, man boobs, and unsightly bulges. In fact, Bloomberg included CoolSculpting as one of their “Eight Best Cosmetic Procedures for Men That You Can Get During Lunch” in 2015.

Just like women, men appreciate the fact that CoolSculpting sessions won’t keep them from work. After each treatment, anyone can resume work immediately. In fact, the sessions usually only take about half an hour, the same amount as most lunch breaks. Painless, convenient, badda bing badda boom.

Also, men (like most women) aren’t the biggest fans of dieting and taking supplements. With CoolSculpting, although eating well is important, you aren’t expected to stick to strict diets. Men love the fact that CoolSculpting offers the ability to define musculature for a more “chiseled” look, and it tends to be able to finally take care of those trouble spots that just won’t go away, no matter how much diet and exercise is put in.

The most common areas that men target with CoolSculpting are the belly, love handles, and moobs (man breasts). These areas can be treated more than once, and they have great results with CoolSculpting treatments. Once the results settle, a leaner, healthier physique is apparent.

Another reason that men love CoolSculpting is because it keeps their secret. For example, with a procedure like liposuction, the results are instant—a telltale sign that an individual has had weight loss surgery. However, with CoolSculpting, the results are gradual. With CoolSculpting, the results are layered so that it will just appear as though he has been working out and eating well.

It depends on each individual’s specific goals and health, but some men have gotten their desired results in just one trip. Be sure to ask us about how many sessions you may need based on your personal goals.

More and more men are finding themselves in med spas, like Fremont Laser & Skin Care to improve their appearance through technology. The result is a newer, slimmer you that doesn’t jolt people with a drastic change. With CoolSculpting, no one will know you’ve had cosmetic work done unless you tell them. If you’re considering CoolSculpting—male or female—please don’t hesitate to contact us to learn more about this amazing treatment.

Weight Loss and CoolSculpting

How Much Weight Will I Lose After CoolSculpting?

The idea that CoolSculpting results in weight loss is a common misperception. After all, if you’re freezing fat away, then surely, you’ll shed a few pounds in the process, right? Wrong.

Destroying fat cells via CoolSculpting is not the same thing as losing weight. By the time you are a teenager, you have the set number of fat cells that you’re going to have in life. Whether you weigh 120 lbs. or 220 lbs., the number of fat cells in your body is the same. As you gain weight (eating more calories than your body uses for energy), your fat cells enlarge. As you lose weight (burning more calories for energy than your body stores in fat cells), they shrink. This is why the key to losing weight is to consume less calories than you burn to lose fat that is stored in fat cells.

Some Fat Cells are Stubborn

Some fat cells are stubborn and frustrating since many of the CoolSculpting clients we see exercise regularly and watch their diets. Despite that, some areas simply don’t respond, and never will. We’re talking about you lower stomach area and flanks (love handles). CoolSculpting is not meant to be a weight loss procedure, but rather a body contouring one.

CoolSculpting freezes fat cells so that they die off and are naturally eliminated by your body. With those fat cells gone, they cannot store fat anymore. And even better, they can’t return. Fat cells weigh barely anything, so when they’re eliminated, you won’t see a difference on the scale. Where you do notice the difference is in your clothes and the shape of your body.

That’s why CoolSculpting works best on people who are close to their weight loss goal, or have achieved their goal, yet have specific areas that simply aren’t and won’t respond to diet and exercise. The number of CoolSculpting treatments it takes to get to your desired shape depends on how many inches you want to lose from an area. The number ranges from one to multiple treatments, with each resulting in a 20-25 percent decrease in the number of fat cells in the treated area.

Diet and Exercise Cannot Be Ignored After CoolSculpting Results

Up to 12 weeks post CoolSculpting procedure, your body is eliminating fat cells. To maintain results, diet and exercise are still necessary. Otherwise, your body will store fat in the fat cells that remain.

Don’t be fooled by the number on the scale. Even though you may weigh the same or more than when you started on your journey to be fit, weight is just a number. Muscle weighs more than fat, so it’s possible to be leaner and weigh more.

DIY CoolScuplting

Do At-Home CoolSculpting Devices Really Work?

No. However, it’s easy to see why DIYers might think they would. The whole concept behind CoolSculpting started when Harvard scientists noted the effect eating popsicles had on some children’s cheeks. So, if eating popsicles had an effect on fat cells in cheeks, then surely applying that idea to other areas isn’t all that crazy. But there is more to freezing fat away… a lot more, so don’t go to bed with ice packs on your stomach tonight or buy a “CoolSculpting” device off Amazon or eBay.

CoolSculpting is a procedure that does freeze fat cells, but the device is designed to do so without harming other skin cells. First, a gel pad is applied to the treatment area, which protects your skin cells from freezing. The gel pad is like a protective layer, similar to wearing gloves in freezing winter temperatures. Exposed skin to freezing results in frostbite, and can result in the skin dying. You’ve probably heard of extreme cases in which people’s toes and fingers were amputated due to frostbite. Same concept applies here. The CoolSculpting device placed over the gel pad carefully lowers the temperature of fat tissues underneath the skin.

At-Home Attempts at “CoolSculpting” are Painful and Dangerous

The CoolSculpting device works with the system to regulate temperature throughout the entire procedure. In fact, fat cells are not really “frozen” as the “freeze fat away” slogan suggests, but merely taken down to 39 to 41 degrees, the point at which fat cells die. The CoolSculpting system does not reach a low enough temperature to harm your skin, but that cannot be guaranteed by using ice packs directly on your skin or non-FDA approved CoolSculpting knock-offs. Not only would attempting to do this at home hurt, but also, it’s dangerous. The harm that would be done to your external skin layer, nerves and muscle tissue trying to get fat cells to the temperature at which they are destroyed could be irreversible.

At-home CoolSculpting devices do not work, and should not be attempted, because there is skill and technique involved with performing the procedure. Fremont Laser & Skin Care professionals undergo hours of training, are licensed, and perform the procedure on clients multiple times a day. In-office CoolSculpting is performed under the supervision of a physician to ensure clients’ safety and satisfaction with end results. This is something you cannot be guaranteed when attempting to DIY CoolSculpting at home.

Last, but not least, CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is the ONLY FDA-approved technique for Cryolipolysis (the medical term for freezing and destroying fat cells). It is available for sale only to trained medical professionals for use in their offices or clinics. Any at-home “coolsculpting” device or system is not the same you’ll find in med spas like Fremont Laser & Skin Care. Using any of these non-Zeltiq devices will result in disappointment in results at best, and scarring, burns and blisters at worst.

Thinking about CoolSculpting?

Tips for Before & After Your CoolSculpting Treatment

Dreaming about getting a little fat zapped away with CoolSculpting? We can’t say we blame you. The treatment is extremely effective and easy. Patients are very happy with their results. If you’re considering having this procedure done, take a look at some great tips for before and after treatment…

Before Treatment

Find out how many sessions you’ll need. This is something to discuss during your consultation in order for your doctor to understand your goals and to have a treatment plan in mind. By finding this out, you’ll also know how much your overall cost will be. Some patients only end up having one session, while others have three or more.

Document. We’re in a golden age of documenting ourselves, and your CoolSculpting adventure shouldn’t be left out! Everyone else who is considering getting this treatment will do their research, find your story, and appreciate you taking the time to show what you’ve been through. You can blog about it, video yourself—whatever you like. Just be honest and keep track of your photos, measurements, and opinions before and after CoolSculpting.

Pain is rare, but be prepared. Most CoolSculpting patients feel totally fine during the procedure, but around 10% have some pain afterward. Because of this, it’s always smart to prepare ahead of time by having ibuprofen on hand—and taking it every eight hours, or as needed.

Have something to do. Bring a book, tablet, your phone, knitting…anything to keep you occupied during your treatment! Sometimes they can take a couple of hours. And hey, maybe that’s the time to start writing out your experience.

After Treatment

Take photos. We see our own bodies every day, and because of this, it can be difficult to tell when changes are happening. That’s why it’s important to snap a quick photo daily during your recovery process. Take frequent photos of your treated areas so that you are able to compare them.

Be patient. While some patients see immediate results, others see them after anywhere from a month to four. Two months seems to be the average mark of significant changes being seen. We know you want to see all the results at once, but it’s important to be patient and give your body time to get rid of those dead fat cells.

Keep in mind: long-term results depend on you! Just because you’ve had CoolSculpting treatment doesn’t mean you have free reign to eat burgers, pizza, cookies and beer. Eating well and exercising are important to continue keeping your weight down and to protect your great results for the long-term.

We hope you find these before and after CoolSculpting tips helpful. If you’re considering the treatment, please don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or to schedule an appointment at Fremont Laser & Skin Care. We look forward to speaking with you!

CoolSculpting vs. Lipo

Which One is Right for You?

Liposuction and CoolSculpting can both help reduce stubborn fat that simply won’t go away, but they are two very different procedures. They have both proven to be effective in reducing adipose tissue and improving body contour, but one must be a little better than the other, right?

It truly depends on your goals and budget, but CoolSculpting definitely has the advantage of being more affordable and not requiring surgery or downtime. Because of this, it’s becoming the more popular option, and is poised to overtake the long-standing #1 spot of liposuction, which started in the 1980s.

The Procedure

CoolSculpting: CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, FDA cleared technique that uses cryolipolysis technology to reduce fat. The procedure uses a vacuum applicator to expose fat cells to an extremely low temperature, which basically freezes (kills) them.

Liposuction: Liposuction is a surgery. It’s a more aggressive treatment in which a surgeon makes small incisions in targeted areas of fat. A long, narrow suction tool is inserted though those incisions and removes the fat.

Targets

CoolSculpting: CoolSculpting is very popular with patients who want to get rid of their double chin, as well as fat in their thighs, tummy, love handles, and flanks. The CoolSculpting device is designed to treat very focused areas of fat.

Liposuction: Lipo treats excess fat over a larger area of the body, including the tummy, hips and sides.

Recovery Time

CoolSculpting: With CoolSculpting, patients can typically resume their normal activities immediately following the procedure.

Lipsuction: Following liposuction surgery, patients can usually return to work and resume most of their normal activities within a week.

Pain Level

CoolSculpting: Many CoolSculpting patients experience little to no discomfort at all during their treatment, and use the time to read, spend time on their phone, or even catch a nap. Others are more sensitive and will remark that there was some pain during recovery, but never anything major.

Lipsuction: It is surgery after all, and some swelling, bruising, and numbness are common afterward. There’s a recovery process, and that process includes expected pain—most patients say that it’s about a 6 on the 1-10 scale. The discomfort and soreness usually lasts for a few days.

Results

CoolSculpting: Changes in the treated area after CoolSculpting can become apparent in as early as three weeks, and the most dramatic results can be seen 1-3 months after treatment.

Lipsuction: Because the body continues to make adjustments for up to a year after surgery, it takes several months to one year to see the final results of most liposuction procedures.

Cost Effectiveness

Patients often ask which treatment is more cost effective: liposuction or CoolSculpting. This is another “it depends” situation. If a patient is treating a single small area which will probably be satisfactorily treated within two sessions, then CoolSculping is the better cost efficient choice. However, if there are multiple areas that a patient wants to treat which would require three or more CoolSculpting sessions, then liposuction may be the way to go.

The Verdict?

For those who are frustrated with a more focused area of fat and like the idea of skipping the knife, CoolSculpting is the better choice. However, if you’re after a full-on fat removal from a few different areas and you’re okay with surgery, liposuction it is! But be sure to talk with a knowledgeable, board-certified surgeon like our specialists at Fremont Laser & Skin Care to discuss your goals and which procedure is right for you.
